Ellya Zulaikha

Ellya Zulaikha is a senior lecturer in Industrial Design Department, Institute of Technology 10 November, Surabaya-Indonesia, since 1998 until now. She has taught Design Method and Design Research for Industrial Design students.

Ellya also has experiences in working with rural craftspeople for more than ten years. She is now researching the potential value of participatory approach in empowering rural craftspeople. Instead of offering assistance to a craft industry based on the recommendations of an expert outsider, she encouraged rural craftspeople to design their own actions, while she acted as a facilitator or generator or ‘pseudo’ insider, depending on the dynamics in the community. The approach is sensitive to community dynamics by placing a focus on understanding motivations, culture, relations and grouping tendencies and working to engage pro-active behaviour according to the motivations of each participant.
