Grace Samboh (b. 1984, Jakarta) began her career in the arts as part of ruangrupa, an artist-collective based in Jakarta. In 2009, Indonesian Visual Art Archive (IVAA) commissioned her to curate the 21 Years Retrospective of Jogja Biennale as one of the archive-based shows at the Jogja Biennale IX – Jogja Jamming (2009). Samboh served as the Executive Director and Curator at the Langgeng Art Foundation, curating ten exhibitions from 2010–12. In early 2011, she co-founded a closed-group discussion forum, Hyphen, which seeks to piece together fragmented Indonesian art history. In 2012, Hyphen evolved and now produces research and curatorial projects. With Hyphen, her current research project is on Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia (Indonesia New Art Movement, 1975-1989), focusing on the avant-garde, which signaled the beginning of Indonesian contemporary art. She is also the Program Manager for Equator Symposium 2014, a new forum initiated by the Yogyakarta Biennale Foundation that gathers cultural intellectuals and practitioners across the equator to share their current approaches in relation to cultural policy. Samboh received a BA in advertising and MA in Visual Art Studies at Gadjah Mada University’s Graduate School, Yogyakarta.
